ISLAMORADA, Florida Keys — Keys boating visitors and residents can practice their follow-throughs while feeding the fish and raising money for charity during the Conch Life Scramble, a wild and wacky on-the-water golf tournament set for Saturday, July 17.

A kick-off party and registration is scheduled at 7 p.m. Friday, July 16, at Marker 88 restaurant, mile marker (MM) 88, with live and silent auctions.

Boats are to meet Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at Islamorada Fish Company, MM 81.5, for hole location assignments and a shotgun start at 9 a.m.

Teams consist of four players with an additional designated driver. Each player is to have two shots at each of nine “holes” located at waterfront venues throughout Islamorada.

Holes consist of two floating rings whose distances from shore range from 30 to 120 yards off the venues’ dock or beach. Golfers are awarded points for their shots, depending on whether they land inside or outside the rings. Scratch golfers beware — only irons and putters are allowed — though mulligans are available for purchase.

The golf balls used are environmentally friendly, biodegradable and become fish food after 96 hours in the water.

Each team is to receive awards for best score. Additional honors are to include best individual score, best-dressed team and hard luck awards. A barbecue and awards lunch is set for 3 p.m. at Marker 88 restaurant.

The entry fee is $500 per team. Proceeds from the event benefit Voices for Florida Keys Children and the Matecumbe Historical Trust.

Additional Conch Life Scramble events are slated for Sept. 25 in Marathon and Nov. 6 in Key West, with a playoff tournament scheduled Dec.11-12 in Islamorada.
