KEY WEST, Florida Keys — Several hundred runners are expected to race through Key West’s historic Old Town and waterfront areas Sunday, Jan. 23, during the annual Key West Half Marathon. Set to begin at 7 a.m., the sporting challenge takes place on a flat, fast 13.1-mile half-marathon course in the scenic island city.
Now in its 13th year, the race typically attracts participants from throughout the United States, and other countries including Great Britain, Canada and Mexico, to compete in Key West’s balmy January climate.
A race registration booth is to be set up from 5-8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, at Dante’s Restaurant, 951 Caroline St., and race packets can be picked up at that time. The registration booth also will be open on race day starting at 6 a.m.
Plans call for the run to begin and end in Key West’s Historic Seaport at Caroline and Margaret streets.
Events surrounding the race include a Saturday night pasta dinner and a Sunday awards ceremony and post–race party with free refreshments and prize giveaways.
Awards are to be presented to the first- through third-place male and female finishers in categories ranging from age 9 and under to age 75 and over, as well as the top overall competitors and those in the masters and military divisions.
In addition to the half marathon, the event includes a 5k run beginning just after the main race.
The half-marathon entry fee is $50 per person before Jan. 15 and $60 per person thereafter. The first 700 entrants are to receive a race T-shirt designed by a local artist. The 5k entry fee is $30 per person.
Proceeds are to benefit the Florida Keys Community College youth swim program and Key West Gator Club scholarship fund.
