KEY LARGO, Florida Keys — A well-blended series of entertainment, educational programs and musical events presented by the Friends of the Key Largo Cultural Center accentuates Key Largo’s growing cultural atmosphere.

During the fall and winter 2011-12 season, theater and musically themed productions include a performance of Robert Harling’s “Steel Magnolias,” a three-day Key Largo Rhythm & Ribs Festival, a Doo-Wop music fest in March and a whodunit murder mystery and comedy.

An Ocean Life Lecture Series also is scheduled, featuring experts in marine sciences to educate and entertain audiences of all ages. “Marine Mammals: Behavior and Incredible Intelligence,” is set for Oct. 21 with Dr. Jill Richardson of the University of Miami. A Nov. 18 lecture by the university’s Dr. Neil Hammerschlag sheds light on shark tagging research and its importance to shark populations in the Florida Keys.

Six weekend evening concerts are to enliven the summer months between June and August. The 2011 summer season included Broadway vocal revues as well as contemporary jazz piano ensembles. Performances for the 2012 season, expected to include another jazz series, are being planned.

All performances take place at the 250-seat theater inside the Murray E. Nelson Government and Cultural Center, located at 102050 Overseas Highway in Key Largo.

The Friends of the Key Largo Cultural Center is a community organization devoted to providing Upper Keys residents and visitors with first-rate affordable entertainment, educational programs and events.
